How the eBay profit calculator works
- Revenue = Sale price + shipping paid by the buyer.
- Profit = Revenue − purchase price − your shipping costs − eBay fees.
- Margin = Profit ÷ revenue. €10 profit on €40 revenue is a 25% margin.
- Target price: The calculator finds the lowest sale price that achieves the desired margin. eBay fees increase with the price, so it recalculates them for each price. With the “,99” switch, it uses the next price ending in ,99.
The eBay fees come from the fee table for business sellers, effective from , and from the rules for private sellers. We checked both pages on Read more in the eBay fee calculator.
Margin or markup?
Margin is based on revenue; markup is based on your costs. A 25% margin corresponds to a 33.3% markup: if your costs are €30 and you add €10, you sell for €40 and have a 25% margin. The calculator always shows the margin.
VAT and price display
- The calculator does not deduct VAT. If you are liable for VAT, it is still included in the profit and must be paid to the tax office.
- Businesses selling to consumers must state the total price including VAT (Section 3 PAngV, obligation to state the total price).
- Dealers in second-hand goods can use the margin taxation scheme: VAT is then calculated only on the amount by which the sale price exceeds the purchase price (Section 25a UStG, margin taxation).

Common questions
Take the revenue, meaning the selling price plus the shipping paid by the buyer. Subtract the purchase price, your shipping costs and the eBay fees. What remains is your profit. eBay calculates its fees on the entire revenue, including shipping.
That depends on the purchase cost, shipping and category. An example for business sellers in the standard category: a €12 purchase cost, €4.99 shipping paid by the buyer and €4.50 postage require a selling price of at least €22.80. With the “,99” toggle, it is €22.99.
Margin is profit divided by revenue. Markup is profit divided by costs. A 25% margin equals a 33.3% markup. The calculator shows the margin.
No. If you are liable for VAT, VAT is still included in the profit shown. Dealers in second-hand goods can use the margin taxation scheme under Section 25a of the German VAT Act (UStG), in which case only the difference between the selling price and the purchase price counts. The calculator does not constitute tax advice.
Private sellers resident in the EEA pay no selling fees on eBay.de for sales within Germany. Their profit is therefore revenue minus purchase and shipping costs. For a delivery address outside Germany, eBay charges 5% of the total amount.
