What the Bundesnetzagentur is proposing
The draft gives Deutsche Post scope to raise prices. For letters, the average increase allowed is 20.35 percent. For private customers' parcels, it is 10.72 percent.
This is a proposal, not yet a price list. Deutsche Post will only set the actual prices afterwards, and the regulator must approve them.
- Letters and business mail: up to 20.35 percent more on average
- Private customers' parcels: an average increase of 10.72 percent
- Period of validity according to reports: 2027 and 2028
What a standard letter could cost
A standard letter currently costs 95 cents. A uniform increase would bring the price to around 1.14 euros. Media reports also mention 1.10 or 1.15 euros as possible prices.
Deutsche Post may decide for itself which products will see larger price increases. The final amount will only be established when the new price list is released.
What happens next
Competitors and consumer advocates can submit comments until 30 October. The final decision is expected in November. Deutsche Post will then submit its actual prices for approval.
What this means for you as an eBay seller
A standard letter is only relevant on eBay for very light items. Most sellers ship parcels, small parcels or Warenpost. Prices for these may also rise, but no fixed amount is known. Check the current terms and conditions with Deutsche Post and DHL.
Do not recalculate your shipping costs just yet; instead, allow for a buffer. If you maintain prices in your Shipnovo plan or your shipping profiles, only adjust them once the price list has been published.
- Make a note of which items are sent by letter or Warenpost
- Allow for a buffer on listings with tight margins
- Wait for the final price list before changing shipping profiles
